5 Reason why artists don’t make money

Welcome to another episode of LnM Show, this segment we going to focus on the driven force of our society money, but strictly to music artists why don’t get it….We were guilty of this as well at the beginning and sometimes we get tempted to ease up but have found a way to discipline ourselves to treat music as strictly business. Disclaimer not all artists are not making money and some of us we are not making what we suppose to so take our points with consideration. The aim of this show is to open your eyes as an aspiring artist and make you realize that there is nothing you will ever enjoy more than your passion so you might as well get paid for it.

For you to not lose momentum on your education, follow the source

  1. We are hooked by burning passion.

Before  we explain take a second and follow us below , thank you .1stly its easy for us to talk about ins and out of music because we in it so we literary talking from experience as you will see our music videos if you look at our channel. Now lets us Elaborate what’s we mean passion hooked us. We love what’s we do to the point that for as long as we performed money will follow one day ,which is the day that will never come so we suggest you add value to your brand and start acting like an artist not a want to be or a student of music. Ask for your money to promoters and other artists who want to feature you because you have done so and so to make yourself worth so much politely take it or leave it. For years we preformed for free and as that is needed at the beginning its shouldn’t exceed 5 years or even less unless it a hobby and you already have money , we realized we were paying for everything we did either with our time or with money so we needed it back with interest. ULwaz sometimes forget and try to be nice on people then Makhula remind us of our vision and that we will not get there if we keep wasting petrol and money to attend shows that make other people rich disregarding the person who’s actually doing the work.

2. We are not business savvy.

I think we are still guilty of this point which is our weakness but if you are a business person don’t try to take advantage loll. What’s we mean is we don’t know business ,we are winging it as we were winging it from the beginning but what’s important for you is to be aware of your weaknesses and get help don’t sign endorsement deals on your own. Don’t perform at a big concert where you have to sign and sign that like you signing a autograph. I learn from Zakes Bantwini sharing his story that he once preformed on the same stage with Usher, in the documents they signed Usher has requested some matt that he will use and our Zakes saw the stage being ripped apart before he got in quickly as the light went off for Ushers exit, he tried complaining it was too late he didn’t request the matt and he signed the contract. We all know he learnt and improve now we don’t have to repeat that same mistake. All I know about being business savvy is knowing the basic of numbers, in music it’s important to know how to calculate % I know at Samro we rob each other but we hardly get don’t royalties anyway because it’s hard to put music on radio so we really don’t know how a percentage work as for us we are now aware about that too. 2% of R2 000 000  = R40 000 not bad neh loll we don’t know who will be getting the rest and why so how I got R40 000 it’s an old formula we forgot after school pay attention its goes like this. R2 000 000 x 2 / 100 = R40 000 .this is the basic and most important.

3. They don’t attract money.

Others say its takes money to make money, that one way to do it. Secondly for a artist to make money there’s a way to attract it. 1stly you should look deserving of money as an artist by spending money on your appearance or at least pictures you send out should be clean and you clean in it. Act like a Celebrity but don’t live like it on your day to day you will be broke. Buy clothes for your performance and do photo shoot, do hair and if you like bling add it, it doesn’t have to be too much, so when a person looks at you will automatically know this guy will want money. Then here is the secret if someone wants to book you let him say the offer 1st so you will be able to negotiate maybe he values you more than you value yourself or just read a book called negotiating without splitting a difference.

4. We don’t know the roads to money.

Okay this is more like an example but it basically knows which streams to invest in that will make you make more money in return no matter how small you have putted in. Where you spend your time as an artist is also important because that will make you valuable what’s do we mean , let’s say you are Dj Tira its wouldn’t make a business sense to always eat your meat at Eyadini Lounge which by the time you are booked there people have had enough of you. Do go there once in a while as a social call but for you Shisanyamas are your place of business that your road that bring you moola if you know what I mean is. Do a mind calculation if you have some cash to invest in music to which will yield a better ROI- Return On Investment, do I bet on radio or tv then you have to decide looking at if your genre is played more on TV or radio, do I put this on clothes that is branded or I boost my page on face book then you look if you have fans who will buy your t-shirts and then earn some profit and go hard in boosting your videos on youtube.

5. You Make money you just do know how to keep it.

Not being able to keep money somehow or at least create a cash flow with it is more like a handicap because you will always blow through your money every time you get it and wonder why you end up in content like this. Personally I know people who do make money through music then drink it through alcohol and drugs that not a problem but the question remains who is going to keep investing on maintain your music life cause you have to be relevant to keep getting more gigs and you have to have a hot song that is well marketed to the public to get a shot of competing .

Even though we don’t like the word compete but somehow we still use the same mediums to send music to the public and the person at the top of the chart is doing all of the positives above. Expensive clothes has nothing to do with your brand as an artist so you better start printing your own and make money while you at it. Well that it for today we know you got insights, that why we would appreciate it if you share this video on your twitter and face book and what app groups and be our ambassador by doing that and we will keep giving everything we know that could help, subscribe on our channel for this kinds of Videos and music Videos, Press Notification Bells too… LnM Show simply means ULwaz No Makhula Show we out with our Bonus point habe

6. Their Team is working against them.

Managers, Producers, Camera guy, Driver and Fellow studio mates and those guys who like to hang out in the studio. This people are important but and big but they might be the ones who are holding you back ,you see the way money is splitted after the gig or that celebration for the launch or those chicks that were called by your hang out friend and you ended up taking one with you and the next morning you went to Shisanyamas you guys seems like you are living a dream already if that not a music video where you just fronting then your team isn’t handling your career well and the manager isn’t doing the management work. In most cases it’s been said that take full control of your life but in this point I say check your surrounding the people who came to your life for another intension now their totally doing something else.

You can stream our latest dance songs

Than lets end this with you , you are the centre of everything as much as we are a group with Makhula I have my perspective he has his own then we collaborate and considerate for one another do you do that with your team ,there should be some compromise in place sacrificing parties you not a celeb yet so calm down and be seen at home rather than your mother or grandma complain about music while it’s you , be reliable at home and get blessings when you went out to gigs cause you come back home sourber.

Thanks again for taking your time to grow yourself, have a great career bye.

7 Artists don’t talk about it

Artists don’t talk about money, while they wake up everyday use it and work for it in 9-5 .Here is the lesson talk about things you want to end up having them… because the fact that’s you not talking about it , also means you don’t thing about it and thus you cannot make it in music or anywhere for that’s matter. Talk, Think, Ask and be money to have it . I have a hard time sometimes dealing with other rappers telling me as Dj Swing that’s they don’t have money or its hard to get money or I’m young and I’m still in school…

I want to be clear here if you want our services you need to first think how you going to pay us before even talking to us. We also value paying forward because its where our success comes from as ULwaz No Makhula we don’t plan and not talk about how we going to pay for our dreams to become a reality or otherwise that’s will be stupid of us ,and really time wasting thing to do.

So please take your work seriously and sorry if I was a bit hush here but I hate the fact that’s its took me so long to realize why people are broke in every place in South Africa is because they don’t worry about the most important in the world money . Even those who looks rich and have things , they don’t have money in the bank and their being charged overdraft fee for being lazy to pay attention to their money , And I’m not perfect either as a artist and a friend I kept studying money and made a mistake of not doing what’s really is a habit of making money which is to save it , I kept spending and I know I was calling investing cause that’s what’s I did but still I needed to save something at the end of the day.

Whatever you are doing, who you doing it for?

Writing this articles is getting easier by the day. Once I open my word document I don’t close it without something of value for you to learn. Today’s topic is who you do it for? And the question I found on face book from a poet complaining that’s people don’t take his masterpieces seriously they don’t see the substance of his poems. I want to broaden this question to a bigger scale of everyday people. To parents we know then length we could go to take care and protect our kids and at the end of the day we lose objectivity of our actions and instead sacrifice all our lives for a cause that’s doesn’t show any result. I want to talk to musicians as well we no different from poets and the comment I agreed to about this topic do what’s ever you do for yourself 1st then the next person

Not having your day planned is a handicap.

take control
  1. Prioritizing family

We all know this one and it’s a pity I lost my kid before he was born, but I can tell you I was already protective of him. So what’s I would’ve done to prevent this from happening? nothing would be a wrong answer ,its what’s in doing now for the future that’s is ahead of me that’s will determine how birth of that’s kid will turns out along with the mother and of Couse health issues and anything above our power. But our lives shouldn’t be driven by this important things and lose ourselves in the process. We are the primary goals in life and anything we do should follow that’s sequence and if you are a kid reading this as soon as your eyes open see how you can better yourself ,because your mother and father are already old and they did all they could with you. If you constantly do things you don’t like just to impress your parents you will miss your mark in life and regrets not trying things that’s you really believed in. Always give your parents advice a thought and then picture the life that’s you want if its not in accordance politely decline but if your parents are your role model and they had done well for their lives do yourself a favor and take their advice and the comfort of support that’s will come with it.

Who you doing it for?

2. Fans and believers

I don’t know how fans ,have our best interest in their hearts but all I know is people I follow are already successful and if I can be successful as well then their mission would’ve come true. And the ultimate goal will meeting them one day and really explain to them what’s helped me to everything they teach and how people should receive the content cause I was once on the other side. I want to be successful for myself 1st then impress my mentors meaning all my guiding lights are the right ones. But as the follower of their content I cannot tell them what’s I need them to teach me because they know how syllabus go. Now artists and other creative makes a mistake of asking fans and believers what type of song they should release. Look when you started what’s you do you didn’t ask anyone and again after you had some supporters you didn’t try to quite because you saw that’s this works, why ask them now while you are already on the lead.

Let’s take a church example people come to church and agree to that’s belief, butwhat’s I see to some churches keep on trying to change and make people accept god over and over.

3. For the good of all

Some of us have ambitious missions in life and I have found mine recently. Others do it for human kind and other for a cause. While all this is good lot of things can side track you and you message get lost in translation ,it will be better though if most people have this  but nature didn’t build us like that’s and even in ancient history people were divided to categories and enjoys life differently and that’s still the thing. All I can suggest here have this cause if it can fulfill something that’s you angry about in a society or maybe overly passionate about. If for not this reasons once a third party come in to play on catastrophic event interfere you will give up , while if you have some sort of a drive you will overcome all the temptations and adversities.

Mr. Nelson Mandela former SA president is famous for not intervening to other countries politics, and that’s why he became a global icon he kept his views to himself and was not swayed by political analysts and reports. With that’s said you can see something that’s is meant to pull you out of your tracks and avoid it cause whatever you are doing is bigger than you even your ego should be kept silence.

People you follow on social media , makes the avarage of the people you spend you time with everyday.

4. I don’t know ,it’s what’s I’m supposed to do

You may be stuck in a life project that’s has no meaning. What’s define you? As a person, is it your spouse, your job or the things you have? Depending on the kind of live you want to live highly successful people they can’t even explain their job description.A person who practice law and have a real estate business can’t be a lawyer or both .So don’t try to be one thing in your life time at the same time don’t try to be everything .When dearth come people who are alive will forget the monthly plastic you use to provide every month if its stop coming. So playing a long game is important something that’s will outlive you. It’s may seems like I’m out of the subtitle but pay attention, I’m saying become duplicable and don’t be intrinsic on one thing. Here what’s I am supposed to do ,go to work and pay the bills and better my life by reading books ,start businesses and write this blog and do music and on and on. So my other answer you already know what’s you suppose to do , get a job or you already working spend time with your family like switch off the TV. Meetings shouldn’t happen when there are problems at home and gathering shouldn’t be funerals you the reader get your whole family together it’s your duty or save for it if you feel it’s going to cost. You know ideas about what’s should be happening in our lives sometimes manifests well when there is money so make it a priority that’s you try to get more than enough so you will be able to be a good influence in your life time , I’m also on that’s journey.

5. Do it for your piece of mind

If you could sleep well for the rest of your life doing, what’s you are doing would you take another thing that’s pays you well but more stressful? It’s depends, there are people who loves challenges in life and there are those who wants comfort. You can love both as well but life is more interesting if you immense on something and money needs responsibility and you not 100% comfortable if you need needs to balance checks and bank account .what’s tends to happen people spend all their money and start over every month. Personally I don’t like that’s strategy but people who are working in my culture say’s working body should be spoiled. And my answer to that’s I respond within is that’s, seeing work as a hard thing that’s after it you need to be spoilt is a first challenge. Secondly what’s if I gave those people money without working what’s could they do with it?

Having a piece of mind is also having a good mindset, I don’t want to lie it’s sometimes hard dealing with people who are different than you every day because they’re your neighbors, family members and maybe employees .You rarely see eye to eye even if you have a point .I’m not saying argue with them but spend less time with them so you will have your own piece of mind. So I have decided to put a bit of my life in this articles, today my uncle came back from clinic with my mother and I respect him so much. So there was a guys there with them and they called me and they ask this guy, is a serious mature handsome guy wears R20 sandals like this? I don’t know how to defend myself in situations like this but I’m in a mission and it’s a lockdown I really don’t have anyone to impress I’m just home minding my business and I view money different than them and they know it. This tends to make me happy because not having people paying attention to me for no reason rather than wearing expensive cloths is good. Cause that’s how envy starts and people begging to ask you for stuff , be careful this is LnM and thanks for reading I hope you took something out of today’s topic.

South African arts and culture, artists and entrepreneur should reinvent themselves

Lockdown has shown weakness in the city innovation and technology, and obviously behind in online experience of music and other sectors but today we will focus more on Music and more on other aspect of art and culture. Let’s us generalize and make you think of this idea ,why should South African Artists should sell music via intentional aggregators who are not working in the best interests of the African society but only on the wellbeing of America? Why network providers are not transparent and accessible for our ideas as upcoming artists and why all the IT students who also passionate about music do not create platforms to help the Province and the country benefits? Lastly why government isn’t encouraging what’sslikouronlife life is doing in Johannesburg so we can control our financial destiny as artists .All I’m seeing is us paying premiums every month and years to guys who want to take advantage of other because they see they’re lazy to do it themselves.

Attension

Call mWith the above questions ,we really don’t have platform to be heard as art and this alone piss me off to the point I’m relying on word press to voice my anger ,yet not only that’s I’m planning and working towards solving this issues. We need efficient online platforms ,where we can see RIO in a matter of a year and encourage our fans and supports to actually purchase our products in this places ,while getting mainstream media to advocate this channels like they do for platforms like iTunes and spotifies

I’m not against this platforms but the legal agreements we sign up for are too much have even fine prints that’s we as artists don’t need because we are not lawyers we are simply musicians .We want something as put my album online and its cost R100 and after one sale I can be able to cash that’s I know there are stories of taxes and are very important but for my blood to start rushing I need to see where my effort is going.

Deejay @ work
Hits with no royalties

I guess I won’t do point form today, we saw artists like Zakwe using their connections and influence pushing artists online on face book platforms and YouTube, that’s is fine known and in the long run which is why we need coders to come forward not in the aim of making money only but to strive for a course, we need marketers to come as well and make South African based product mainstream. Tiktok are using artists music to push their platform which is good and knowing that’s this product is from china and china government back its startups and mostly its businesses is no brainer that’s South Africa should cut a pattern.

We not interested in models ,its doesn’t matter if the cat is black or white for as long its can catch the mice

Nelson Mandela

Follow us on Twitter to get aticles as they come out

Music ,Painting ,Dancing , skating ,drama ,film and so on need to be protected as our IP intellectual Property we know this big companies has audience that’s we still need but we can still start our own thing from the scratch and for Coders and IT guys I’m sure you know now how this work ,you build something in order to fill a need ,so be different in your approach and cut most of time consuming part and make your innovation easy and most importantly learn the business side of things because if this becomes a reality Venture Capitalists will pop up everywhere with millions and want control on valuable startups with a vision and eventually wants control ,So this will only mean don’t build to sell because that’s strategy doesn’t work any way build to solve a problem and pay attention to what’s feature people uses the most on the product you put out and embrace that’s pivot and don’t stick to one version so much that’s you miss the whole picture or other players beat you to it. Check all the buy products, the incongruities and so on read books like innovation and entrepreneurship like peter Drucker and rework.

Kwazulu Natal Should lead in the production rather than what’s is happening now which is consuming and private businesses can intervene to make this possible, I don’t want to lie I don’t know anything about stocks yet but the moment we hear that’s south African based internet app or website is making an impact I will put my money there.

Ideas shouldn’t be money hungry too , see I get lot of emails from international brand wanting us to be their ambassadors using our talents that’s ok , The problems is us while pushing their products ,they want us to pay premiums ,so that’s simply a no ,if you build something make sure the ambassador get what’s they work for ,and if they have to be charged then it’s should be taken in the money that’s brand is supposed to pay him ,Same as this thing of royalties I know artists are not greedy ,while this aggregator wants money upfront ,the winning one is the one that’s takes a reasonable percent after the music sales. So that’s how I think it can be a win, win. Money is a fuel of a business but server and fast computers are the tools of an IT guy and they rely on people to test and complain if you put a premium from a get go you will have a problem .Unless there is a direct service on top of it and product.

ULwaz No Makhula coming soon Single

We can learn from Mxit introducing moola for their messaging platform ,If you can build something with initial free credits and get people subscribing and hooked with good content in top of it that’s will be a winner .I can keep going but my point is clear now .Those who have money but love to take this challenge be my guest technology has evolve a lot from old days spoon and plate to now computers and coming Artificial Intelligence ,as well as VR Technology .I may add to that’s point to everyone reading that’s you don’t have to bet on this alone this Pandemic has shown that’s idea that’s may seem lame like partying alone at home as a terrible one ,but VR technology shows that’s if the experience I wanted was to see ULwaz No Makhula perform and ULwaz no Makhula wanted to perform for a crowd Black mirror TV series has demonstrated that’s its possible as well as VR technology .but we know there is more to this than that’s so any app that’s can serve that’s experience will do well in a market place .Thanks for checking unique ideas today from this LnM website please share maybe someone might be intrigued and do something.

In closing Vusi Thembekwayo has once said that’s government should make things accessible for businesses that’s has a growth mindset and don’t want to remain small. Tax clearances and infrastructure should be in place to improve our economy as a whole and efficiency in place. What’s he added is business people should think big and act accordingly so check out his videos on YouTube .I’m also guilty of the bad things we do mostly us black people, making the entire paperwork of a business to bid for one tender which is wrong cause its somehow shows the main focus is on money, chances are the math is not good and that’s is way dangerous than having a successful project and don’t see ROI. Thanks please follow us as ULwaz No Makhula on all social media.

Let’s me make a disclaimer , I’m not against USA based businesses and not against how they operate but putting a client 1st is my concern ,e.g. ITunes is too big now to maintain its operations without third parties ok but I was a member of one aggregator and I signed up with a fee ,when I wanted to cancel they asked for another fee why is that’s I asked and didn’t get a valid answer because they were taking premium on me and I was pas that’s aggregator since there was a new better one I want having this problem ,as a customer this did not sit well with me ,they had my card number which meant I was at their mercy .so things like notifying a customer about upcoming charges may be of help ,while others may try to dodge that’s but others will see a great anticipation and budget accordingly.

What are the priorities of the artist in the 21st century?

What’s a musician should priorities in this day and age welcome to another informative episode of LnM ULwaz no Makhula Show we keep coming back and we hope you get better by a video that you watch our points are simple all you have to do is to understand them and connect the dots. Before we get into it please subscribe and press the notification bell as well as commenting below if there is anything intriguing we will join you.

  • 1 Having quality music is the most important.

Maybe some points will be repeated but emphasizing this cannot be enough you see a song made in 2010 can be worth millions if it was left in a good condition or files were well kept , that means using quality mic and monitors to hear what’s you are doing if your producer doesn’t upgrade  you both need to be of blame but mostly the owner of the music ,artists has a tendency to leave anything to a producer even terrible songs you cannot fix that. So Priority even if you just starting out don’t spend your money on alcohol and drugs and thing someone should invest on your music you do that then see ladies later .Take your work seriously cause it will outlive you  and you don’t want to leave a legacy that won’t pay dividends to your family.

If you not moving up or down in life ,you going down.

Grant cardone
  • 2 Having Music on the internet

It should be on the streets and on the internet and if you can even on TV and radio…we have expanded and made ourselves available on youtube because we play a long game. You can learn from other channels overseas but we are much better to you if we are local we speak the same language you can ask for consultation and direction. So the first thing we will do is to check your music online every demo and companies require your stuff to be online .Add to free platforms and paying ones you just don’t know when you going to blow up.

Big Zulu and Dj Swing.

Ever since Swing worked on Zulu’s 1st Album we have never heard anything from them ,Nkabi rapper is seemed to be hooked on a trap now and Swing has remained in his style thats made him who he is today ,We expecting his beats on Duncan Skuva Album ,Slogan Sekasi he was caught saying im no longer giving my beats away for free even his artists ,learn more about Swing as now focus on QGom as ULwaz No Makhula..Big Zulu on the other hand he is constanlty release hits singles.

  • 3 Getting paid

We tend to dismiss this point until it’s too late and we in too deep into our fear of asking for what’s we deserve .I heard that money is our livelihood well that can be repeated enough .You may not want money for your music because you have your own studio and you record for free your parent s pays the bills but that a bad trade because your parents will pass and you will have to look after yourself and maybe your siblings .Get your money right learn skills to ask for it be persistence and love people and don’t fear then ,read books on influencing psychology and know human nature because as artists we always deal with people some others has it in them to know how to fit in and place and interact with people like Makhula here ,you can call him a go getter he literally talk to people that most of us are scared of and ask. So you too listening or watching ask your shall receive if not the answer is default.

  • 4 Priorities your branding

From the name to the logo to the appearance to the consistency of your work and posts people should be familiar with your name and should be easy to be called look at the big brands and see what’s they have in common they set the trends that should be you, they do things 1st that should be all of us it’s called being innovative so we need that element in our music it should be the same thing all the time. Have things that go out in the form of marketing with your name and logo, alongside the posters, sponsor and get that value look apart don’t have a big gap between the perceived name and what’s actually appear. You are an artist your face should be familiar as much as your name , don’t lets your name go out there and hide your face ,there are certain pleasures you get just because people recognizes you of cause the paparazzi can be in your case as well but still they are working your behalf to make an awareness about you. Get attention than the rest is history be like a salesman and close people and get your money equivalent to your time worth and invest in your brand although the ROI won’t be instant

  1. Priorities being visible online posting This shouldn’t be all you do, I don’t know how I can say balance this but we can say have other things that are important during the day like a job that way you won’t binge face book and say ULwaz No Makhula suggested that. Post few times a day in every social and interact with people there if you can add some humor do that, don’t post links every time you show up. As ULwaz what’s I have developed because I want informative video on youtube ,the video I watch talk about money and sales and so on so I test all those on social media ,your twitter your face book and once you are in my what’s app you better get my beat as an artist or the music that you are doing lacks quality loll just kidding but yea in most cases we post about how we Progressing as ULwaz no Makhula every move we post and lately big things have been happening so we were able to build some true fans by our posts.

That how we close, today we have homework for you leave us a subject that is music related that you will like us to talk about. Comment below and for feature email ulwaznomakhula@gmail,com all small letters and like our face book page ULwaz No Makhula and twitter and Instagram same handle as well as youtube.
